Thai Tea-Some Basic Facts

Thai tea has taken the world by storm. Its allure comes from its creamy, and surprisingly healthy flavor that comes from a mixture of Ceylon tea, sugar and skimmed milk (some people use condensed, evaporated or whole milk). Apart from being a popular recreational drink, Thai tea also boasts myriad health benefits including relieving stress, boosting overall metabolism, controlling asthma attacks and preventing the growth of carcinogens and free-radicals which are responsible for the proliferation of cancer. All this while allowing you to experience a rich, exotic taste and aroma that has come to resonate with tea lovers the world over.

What is Thai Tea?

Thai tea originated from Southeast Asia and was popular among Chinese black tea leaves. Today, the drink is popular not only in Thailand and Indonesia but all over the world. Restaurants from Jakarta, Bali to New York and Sydney serve the delicacy either hot or cold. Whether you like it hot or cold, Thai tea serves the purpose and hits the spot each time. It can be drunk with milk and sweeten with sugar or condensed milk. Curiously, in Thailand, most people take Thai tea either in restaurants or on the go given the shortage of traditional tea shops that are popular in other cities around the world.

Brewing the perfect cup of Thai (iced) tea

Unlike ordinary tea or chai, Thai tea requires a certain number of unique ingredients. To brew it at home, you need:

  • 6 cups of water
  • 8 black tea bags
  • 1 cup of evaporated milk
  • 4 tbs of sugar
  • 4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 4 tsp of cardamom
  • crushed ice

The process begins with boiling water then the tea bags with the ground cardamom for approximately 5-6 minutes. It is the ground cardamom seeds that give the tea its unique spicy vanilla-like flavor. The next step is to remove the tea bags and wait a couple of minutes for your tea to cool down.

A great next step would be to get 4 glasses with crushed ice then add your tea, filling the glass to about 3/4 of full capacity. This way you will leave enough room for the remaining ingredients to be added.

Now, add to each glass 1 tsp of sugar, 1 tsp of cinnamon and 1/4 cup of milk.

Do not stir. Instead, enjoy as it embellishes your glass and unleashes its powerful aroma and flavor.

While the above are great steps for brewing Thai tea, not everyone can get it right. Instead of messing with the ingredients, one of the best ways of getting instant and high-quality Thai tea is by purchasing MezzoX Hot, Iced Thai Milk Tea.
